Raksha Bandhan 2022 Rituals

Women start preparing for Raksha Bandhan days or weeks before the event. They will buy Rakhi, the sacred cord tied around his brothers’ wrists. In exchange, the brothers will buy for their sisters.

The brothers (brother-in-law), and other family members, met early in the morning. The ladies tie a racket to their brothers’ wrists, smear tilak on their foreheads, and offer sweets, dried fruit, and other gifts after lighting a Diya before the deity.

A sister prays for her brother’s welfare while tying up Rakhi. The practice includes aarti thali, which is a brightly colored plate, flowers, sweets, and more.

In exchange, the brother sends his sister gifts, such as sweets, dried fruit, and the like. They kissed and the elders blessed the children. For several days the brothers wore Rakhi as a memorial and to show respect for his sister’s love.

Raksha Bandhan 2022 Stories in Hindu Mythology Bhavishya Purana

According to Indian texts, Rakhi is first mentioned in the Puranas. According to Bhavishya Purana, war broke out between the gods and the demons. Demons were ruling the Gods and the Leader of the Gods “Indra” was escaping to save his life and Indrani saw him. He then tied one of the Resham strings sung with the mantra in his hand and that day was the Purnima of the month of Shravan.

This magic thread worked for Indra and he defeated the Demons which led to the restoration of his ‘Swarg’ empire. From that day on, the month of Shravan Purnima became a Day of Defense and we celebrate this tradition as Raksha Bandhan.

The story of Asur Raj Bali

There is another legendary story related to Bhakt Prahlad’s son Asur Raj Bali. As the story goes, Bali won all the loka’s by gaining great power. To end his cruelty, King Vishnu switched to Vaman’s avatar and sent him to Pataal Loka.

At pataal Loka, Bali delighted King Vishnu by punishing him and asking King Vishnu to stay with him at Patal Loka. King Vishnu granted her request. To fulfill his wish the King began to live only in Patal Lok so the goddess Lakshmi began to worry about this. Finally, Devarshi Narad lifted the goddess to tie the knot and make her his brother. This is the reason why King Vishnu returned to his original place of Vaikuntha.

A story from Mahabharat

Also in the Mahabharata, there is a story related to this festival. When King Krishna killed Sisupala at that moment one finger was cut off and blood came out. Draupadi spotted it and cut off the fabric of his robe and tied it to Krishna’s finger. In showing kindness on his return Krishna protected him during the Vidyut Sabha period by giving him an unfinished cloth to protect him in Dushasan and which was a great change and the real reason for the Mahabharata.

The most famous story in history is Mewad Queen Karmavati and Mughal Emperor Humayun. When Bahadur Shah attacked Mewar and the Queen was in great distress he sent Rakhi to Emperor Humayun to defend his empire. In honor of Rakhi the Queen, he went to Mewad and fought against Bahadur Shah.
